Tour Description

Our first stop is at the Hagar Qim Complex which includes Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temples. Before entering the temples we start at the new visitors centre where you can understand better how these magnificent temples were built over 5000 years ago! We then continue with a tour to the Hagar Qim Temple. This temple has the largest and heaviest megaliths out of all the temple sites around the Maltese Islands, some slabs weighing a staggering 20 tons.

We continue to Ghar Dalam (meaning dark cave). The Ghar Dalam Cave is a highly important site as it was here that the earliest evidence of human settlement on Malta, some 7,200 years ago, was discovered. This huge cavern is some 144 metres deep, but only the first 65 metres are open to visitors. The lowermost layers dating back to the pleistocene age, around 180,000 years ago, contained the fossilized bones of dwarf elephants and hippopotami, whereas other layers date back to the end of the last Ice Age around 16,000 years ago and contain micro-mammals and birds, red deer, brown bear, fox and wolf.

Our final site includes the ancient Tarxien Temples. Tarxien was the first temple site to be excavated scientifically and it offers a unique collection of circa. 3000 BC sanctuaries. Stone idols and tablets, domestic animals carved in relief, altars and screens decorated with spiral designs and other patterns, oracular chambers and riches enhance the attractions of these temples. The elevated walkway around the temple complex enhances our visit showing up an impressive site.
